We have recently received the sad news that our Life Member and former Vice President (1990-1994) of the Hong Kong Neurosurgical Society, Dr. John Ching-kwong Kwok (郭正光醫生), has passed away on 9 Apr 2020 at the age of 69 in Hong Kong in the presence of his family.
Dr. Kwok was a medical graduate of the National University of Ireland Galway (1973–1979) and received his postgraduate medical and neurosurgical training at Richmond Surgical Hospital and the Jervis Street Hospital in Dublin. He obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and Edinburgh and returned to Hong Kong in 1985, joining the Neurosurgical Department at Kwong Wah Hospital, and soon after became the Chief of Service of the Department in 1989. He was the Specialist Foundation Fellow in Neurosurgery when the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine was formed in 1993. He became a renowned Neurosurgeon in Hong Kong, with over 30 years of experience in the field - working closely together with life-long colleagues at Kwong Wah Hospital. He continued to work as a part-time consultant since 2012, and pursued his research as the Adjunct Professor at the Division of Biomedical Science, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Dr. Kwok was a multi-talented Neurosurgeon and pioneered in important areas within the specialty of Neurosurgery, namely, neuronavigation and minimally invasive surgery; web-based clinical information system; and, last but not the least, neuroendovascular therapy. In 2002, Dr. Kwok, together with other Neurosurgeons and Neurointerventional Radiologists, formed the Hong Kong Society of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology, of which Dr. Kwok was the Founding President. He was also the Founding and Executive Member of the Asian-Australasian Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology, and the Hong Kong Stroke Society.
On behalf of the Neurosurgeons of Hong Kong, I would like to say that Dr. Kwok would always be remembered. I would like to express our deepest condolences to Dr. Kwok’s family.
